Bastrop is the second oldest city in Texas. It was a prominent stop on El Camino Real, which is the King's Highway linking colonial Spanish missions in Texas. First known as Mina, its Mexican name, it became part of Stephen F. Austin's original colony. Later, it emerged as an important center for the new Republic after many of the prominent settlers initially attracted by Bastrop's bountiful natural resources fought and won at the Alamo. Over 125 properties in town are listed on the National Register of Historic Places, making Bastrop the first such multiple listing in the United States in 1979.
