The winter of 05-06 we had some such big hogs. When Wylie Hill was about a week old, he woke us one night and Aunt Martha Wayne who was sleeping on a cot in the room got up with him. She said "Oh Lord, the end of the world done come." I turned over and saw out the window a red glow. I knew it was fire. I called Mr. Charlie and he called Papa. They put on their pants and rushed out. The smoke house which was just backof the kitchen was on fire. He came back and told me to to get up. Aunt Martha and Mama drew water from the cistern. Mr. Charlie got on top of the kitchen and kept it wet with the water. The handed him. But the smokehouse and eleven big hogs were almost a total loss. Nobody thought there was any fire left or the fire had died, and failed to see that some coals were still alive. After having the smoke going all day they thought a heavy ham had fallen, and scattered the coals.
