Using Ancestry.com, I have been able to build out the family tree on the Holmes side. Sarah Elizabeth Holmes was the wife of Augustus.
According to Toni, a Holmes descendant, all but one of the 7 children of Robert Holmes and Sarah Pope came to the DeSoto parish, south Caddo parish area in the 1850's. They were from Oglethorpe County, Georgia. (Same place the Hills came from.)
The oldest daughter, Priscilla Holmes married Francis Herman Moore. He died at a young age in Georgia. Priscilla stayed in Georgia until her mother died in late 1850, then she moved to south Caddo Parish Louisiana where she was a planter in a community called Summer Grove (now a suburb of Shreveport). She had 4 children, only two of whom had children who lived to be adults.
Her oldest daughter also married a Moore. They also had 4 children, 2 sons and 2 daughters. Only one daughter lived to become an adult. She married an Elston. One of the Elston daughters married a McDade. One of the McDade daughters is the mother of former Louisiana governor Buddy Roemer.
The oldest Holmes son was Burwell. He removed to Kemper County, Mississippi where he also had a plantation. He is buried there as are his first wife and at least 2 of his 7 children who died as infants. I haven't been able to trace his other children's lines very far.
The next child was Tabitha. She married a planter named James Greer Fullilove. They moved first to Mississippi where 3 of their 5 children died as infants. Then they moved to south Caddo parish where they remained on their plantation at Four Forks, Louisiana. Their 2 remaining sons had large families and sired many prominent citizens of the Shreveport area. Again, I didn't know these people were related to me until last year!
Next came William who was also a planter and who settled in DeSoto parish. He had a number of children who, from my research, also appear to have sired a number of prominent citizens in both the DeSoto parish and Shreveport areas.
Next was Toni's gg-grandfather who was first an overseer for his brother-in-law, J.G. Fullilove, and then a planter himself near Belle Bower in DeSoto parish. He apparently lost a lot in the Civil War as he died in debt in 1888. Her gg-grandmother died sometime just before 1880. They had 9 children, 6 sons and 3 daughters. I have heard from some family members that Robert Holmes was a mean man. I know that all but one of his sons died young. That would be the oldest son, Robert Franklin Holmes, who moved to Jasper County, Texas where he died around 1930 in his early 70's. Two of Robert's sons were murdered. His second son, James Wylie, died in 1878 in a gunfight with his brother-in-law - they killed each other - it was some dispute over his dead wife - they were both quite young. Robert's youngest son, Willie, was shot and killed by a criminal that he and a posse were trying to apprehend by sneaking up on his house at the midnight hour - it did not work - he shot and killed my uncle and then escaped. I do not think they ever captured this man. His other 3 sons died at the ages of 35, 39 and 41. His youngest daughter never married. Robert's youngest 3 children had no children. His oldest 5 children had only 11 children between them. However, her g-grandmother, Sally Estelle, made up for this by having 12 children.
The son just younger than Robert Holmes was Wilie. He married a Scott. Both he and his bride died young as did their little daughter.
The youngest son was John. This is Sarah Elizabeth Holmes Hill's father. He and wife Elizabeth Temperance Ogilive had 11 children. His oldest son William moved to Abilene where he, his wife Sarah Rebecca Ogilvie had 10 children. He and Sarah and at least 4 of their children are buried in Abilene in the city cemetery.
Second son Miles Wylie Holmes died at Vicksburg.
Sarah Elizabeth, oldest daughter and third child, married Augustus M. Hill .
Burwell Anthony Holmes married Kate Battle, had 3 children and moved to Los Angeles.
John Robert (Tommy?) Holmes
Emma Virginia Holmes moved to Bastrop, Texas, married John Northcross Jenkins , had 5 children and is died and is buried there.
Robert A. Holmes
Thomas Wendell Holmes is next. He married Carrie McMillan, had 5 children and died in Caddo Parish in 1922 at the age of 64.
Mary J. Holmes is next - I have no information on her either.
Ripley Adams Holmes is the next child. He also died in 1922 in Shreveport, LA. He was 62. I have very little information on him.
The youngest child was Ida Fullilove Holmes. She married Sam H. McDonald and lived in Texas for some time. They had 6 daughters, but I do not know what happened to many of these girls. Ida is died in Shreveport in 1934. Two of her daughters married Fulliloves. They seem to have moved back to Shreveport.
